How private is Haven, really?
If you're going to tell something your 2 AM thoughts, "trust us, it's private" isn't good enough. Here is the actual walkthrough — what happens to a message, what's stored, what's never done, and what you can delete — in plain English, matching our Privacy Policy rather than replacing it.
What happens when you send a message
- 1. It goes through a safety screen. Every message is checked before any guide replies, so crisis language is met with crisis resources instead of a persona.
- 2. It's processed to generate the reply. Your message and relevant conversation context travel through Haven's server to its AI provider — Google Cloud AI — because that processing is what produces the guide's response. This is true of every AI product; we think you should be told, plainly, whose infrastructure reads your words. Ours is named in the Privacy Policy.
- 3. The conversation is saved to your account. Your history is private to you, available on your signed-in devices, and deletable — per chat or all at once — whenever you choose.
What Haven never does
- No ads, no ad trackers. Your reflections are never used to target you with anything, here or anywhere else.
- No selling data. The business model is a subscription — if you cancel, we lose revenue, not you your privacy.
- No audience. Nothing you write is public, shareable-by-default, or visible to other users. There is no feed.
- No engagement machinery. No streaks, badges, or guilt notifications engineered to harvest more of your attention — a deliberate design position.
- No training of our own models on your words. And we name our AI provider instead of hiding behind "industry-leading security."
What you control
Settings is where the promises become buttons: delete any individual chat or memory, erase all saved conversations, export your account data, request full account deletion, and switch off the optional analytics — a toggle that also deletes the already-stored events. Analytics, when on, records which features get used under a pseudonymous key; it never records the text of your reflections. What we deliberately don't collect covers the design philosophy.
The honest limits
A privacy page you can trust has to include the parts that aren't flattering, so:
- Haven is not anonymous. Accounts use an email address — that's what makes cross-device history and one-click deletion possible. Privacy here means "no one else sees it," not "no one knows you have an account."
- Haven is not covered by HIPAA — consumer wellness apps generally aren't. Anyone implying their journaling app is "HIPAA-protected" is usually borrowing clothes that don't fit the category.
- AI processing is real processing. Generating replies requires sending message content to our AI provider. We minimize and we name names, but an app that claimed your words never leave your device while an AI replies to them would be lying.
- Law is law. Like every online service, Haven can be legally compelled to produce data it holds. Our answer to that is structural: collect little, and give you deletion controls that mean there's less to produce. Six questions to ask any reflection app
Including us. If a product can't answer these on a public page, that's your answer:
- Who is the AI provider that processes my words — named, not "leading AI technology"?
- Is my writing used for advertising, sold, or shared for "research partnerships"?
- Can I delete everything myself, in the app, today?
- Is the business model subscriptions — or my attention?
- What happens when I mention a crisis — is there a real safety layer?
- Does it claim to be therapy? (It shouldn't.)

Common privacy questions
Can anyone else see what I write in Haven?
No. Your reflections are private to your account. They are never public, never visible to other Haven users, never sold, and never used for advertising. Message text is sent to the AI provider only to screen for safety and generate the reply.
Does Haven sell my data or show me ads?
No ads, no ad trackers, no selling data — the business model is a subscription you can cancel, not your attention or your data. Haven has a small optional analytics system that records feature-usage events (never the text of your reflections) under a pseudonymous key; you can turn it off in Settings, which also deletes the stored events.
Is my writing used to train AI models?
Haven does not train any model of its own on your reflections. To generate each reply, your message and relevant conversation context are processed by Haven’s AI provider (Google Cloud AI) under Haven’s agreement with it — that processing is what produces the response, and the Privacy Policy names the provider so you never have to guess. We believe naming the provider and linking the terms is the minimum any reflection app owes you.
Can I delete my data?
Yes, and deletion is a first-class feature, not a support ticket: Settings lets you delete individual chats and memories, erase all saved conversations, export your account data, and request full account deletion. Turning analytics off also deletes that account’s analytics events.
Is Haven anonymous?
No — and any app with accounts that claims to be fully anonymous deserves a skeptical read. Haven accounts use an email address so your reflection history can follow you across your signed-in devices and so you can delete it all in one place. What Haven does promise is privacy: no one else sees your words, and they are never sold or used for ads.
Is Haven covered by HIPAA?
No. HIPAA covers healthcare providers and insurers — not consumer wellness apps, which means it does not cover Haven, and it does not cover most journaling or AI chat apps you have heard of either. What protects you here is the Privacy Policy, consumer-privacy laws like PIPEDA in Canada and state laws in the US, and — most practically — an app designed to collect little and delete on request.
